In the 1800s, a British officer imposed a border between the then Indian Raj and (what is now) Afghanistan right through the middle of the Pashtun areas. This ensured that Pashtuns would ever after be minorities on both sides of the line. Following both World Wars European nations defined borders for many Mid-Eastern nations generally ignoring ethnicities and rivalries. In the late 1940s the world recognized the state of Israel, turning control of that area over to people who had been a minority but were ever after increased by refugees from Europe and the world. This ensured that the Palestinian people had no country of their own. In 1953 the CIA helped overthrow the democratically elected Prime Minister of Iran and installed the Shah, a man that the CIA held in contempt.
The western world, principally Britain, France and the United States, have demonstrated for well over one hundred years that we have absolutely no understanding of the Mid-East. Further, we have demonstrated that we have no favorable intentions toward the people of that huge, complex area and its cultures. We seldom have had good reason to send our soldiers there, except to perpetuate the fiction that we were protecting our freedoms and/or democratizing the people of that region. We were justified only in a few isolated cases. When we fought the Second World War, we had reason to be in northern Africa. When Osama Bin Laden led Al Qaeda to bomb the World Trade Center, we had reason to go to where he hid and try to eliminate him and them. When Iraq invaded Kuwait, we could argue that driving back Saddam Hussein was justified. Even when some of our citizens were kidnapped in 1979, it was in long-delayed retaliation for our deposing of the leader of Iran in 1953. But now that we in the United States have finally freed ourselves from dependence on the region’s oil, we have no reason to send our children there to die, be maimed, and learn that it’s okay to kill civilians.
Right now we have a huge migration of people out of Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan. Certainly they are fleeing the forces of ISIS, and before ISIS, Al Qaeda and the Taliban. But isn’t there some reason to suspect that some of that large migration just might be due to the fact that we and our allies, plus the government of Syria, recently joined by Russia, and now increased by France and Great Britain, are bombing every city, town and village out of existence and with no real regard for civilian casualties. Such is the character of military double-speak that if a civilian is killed in the vicinity of a real target, they are classified as terrorists.
There are those in our political system, and those in our arms profiting industries, that want us to fight wars for their personal gain. Right now, they would have us refuse to accept a nuclear treaty that is the best we will ever get, and much better than the status quo, because it has been arranged by their political rivals. They would rather have war. We, and certainly our children, owe them nothing. They are a sickness. In fact, by destroying Iraq, we have already removed the regional block to Iran. What more self-defeating actions do our warmongers contemplate? We do not belong in the Mid-East. We do not understand it and cannot make it succeed as a region. We can only continue to devastate it and stimulate the recruitment of America-haters by terrorist organizations. Leave it alone to solve its own problems! Defend our country here at home or, at least, for clear cause elsewhere.
