The Business, Moneyed and Political classes want there to be an un- or under-employed supply of potential workers to come to them to beg for work. In this country, the desired level of unemployment is at least 5%. Levels below this are believed to produce “wage pressure.” This “wage pressure” is understood to make higher salaries necessary in order to get and keep valuable workers. Those at the top of the wealth pyramid do not want there to be enough work to provide full employment for those desiring to work, and capable of working. They would rather be able to choose who works and to claim that the remainder are lazy. This was evidenced after the 2008 economic downturn when they continued to insist that the unemployed should just “get a job,” even though they had just been laid-off, and there were no jobs available.
